Luster
pearl. High quality pearls will have thick nacre which results in a
deep inner glow. Different types of pearls will show luster in
different ways. Fine Akoya pearls will have a mirror like gloss,
while other pearls may show a soft, satin sheen. Pearls that are
graded "Poor" will often show a dull, chalky appearance.

Nacre Quality
Nacre is the body and soul of the pearl. Nacre and luster go hand in
hand. A pearl's appearance helps determine its quality. Generally,
a pearl with thicker nacre will be lustrous as well. A pearl with thin
nacre will not. Pearls with thick nacre will be much more durable.

Surface Quality
A completely clean, blemish free pearl is a rare treasure. Most
pearls show some type of surface irregularity. They may have
bumps, spots, pits, scratches, flat spots and even wrinkles. Pearl
nacre can be cracked during the drilling process. The number and
type of surface characteristics will effect the grade of the pearl.

Shape
Pearls are produced in many shapes. They are categorized as
"round", "near round", "oval", "button shaped", "semi-baroque",
and "baroque". Generally, the more round the pearl, the more
value it has. A less expensive baroque stand of pearls may be very
lustrous and very attractive.

Color
Today, the choices of colors in pearls is amazing. From the brilliant
whites of the Akoyas pearls to the soft pastel colors of the
freshwater, the amazing black Tahitians with their colorful
overtones, and the satiny South Sea pearls in their white and golden
hues. The choice of color is the preference of the customer.
