Luster:
Luster is where the true beauty of the pearl lies. Luster is more
than just the surface sheen. It is the result of light traveling through
layers of nacre, then reflecting back to the eye. No other gem has
the luster of a pearl.
Surface quality:
Pearls are an organic gem. It is natural for pearls to show surface
characteristics. A completely blemish free pearl is a rare treasure.
Since rarity influences value, the better the surface quality, the
higher the value of the pearl.
Shape:
While round is the most recognised, pearls come in a large variety of
shapes. Pearls can be near-round, oval, button, drop, baroque, coin
shaped and others. Shapes may vary, but each one has qualities to
determine its value. A pearl that is well shaped or symmetrical, will
have more value than one that is not.
Nacre:
Nacre is the layers that the mollusk deposits on the irritant that is
inside the pearl. The irritant may be natural or induced with help
from man. Generally, the thicker the layer of nacre, the more
durable the pearl will be. It also has a direct relationship with the
luster of the pearl.
Matching:
Matching applies where there is more than one pearl involved, such
as necklaces, bracelets, and any jewelry containing multiple pearls.
It requires skill and labor to sort pearls and produce a well-matched
piece of finished jewelry. Excellent uniformity is an important
overall value factor.

| Pearl Grading |
There are five criteria that characterize a pearl and therefore
its grade. These characteristics are luster, shape, surface
texture, nacre thickness and matching. The grading of the
pearls along with the size and color would determine the value.
The House of Pearls utilizes the AAA, AA+, AA, A quality
grading system for our pearls. South Sea and Tahitian pearls
are sold from the pearl farms using A, B, C and D grades.
We grade our South Sea and Tahitian pearls using the same
criteria as shown below.
